Week Nine
MARCH 31 - APRIL 4
Regular Tasks
Timestable focus | Spelling list | 15 minute personal reading.
Extra Topic Task
This week we are writing information reports about the Kererū. Visit the Kererū Development Project site to see an example of a report detailing information about the Kererū. Look also at the reports giving information about 'diet' and 'nesting'. You will find information similar to what you have already collected in your data sheets. If you come across some new information, write it into your homework book.
REMEMBER: Keep track of any Kererū that you or your family see, and add to your record sheet.
Week Eight
MARCH 26-28
Regular Tasks
Timestable focus | Spelling list | 15 minute personal reading.
Extra Topic Task
Same as last week - keeping track of any Kererū that we see.
The data to collect is as follows...
Date | Time | Location | How many | What were they doing | If feeding on tree or with other birds, what species | Features or leg band
Week Seven
MARCH 17-20
Regular Tasks
Timestable focus | Spelling list | 15 minute personal reading.
Extra Topic Task
This week we begin our task of keeping track of any Kererū that we see. In your homework book will be glued the beginning of a table that you will use over the next few weeks to keep a record of when and where you see any Kereru. We will then transfer our information to the large map of local sightings.
The data to collect is as follows...
Date | Time | Location | How many | What were they doing | If feeding on tree or with other birds, what species | Features or leg band
Week Six
MARCH 10-14
Regular Tasks
Timestable focus | Spelling list | 15 minute personal reading.
Extra Topic Task
Choose one of the birds from New Zealand's extint list. Research some more information about it.
Please use your own words to present this. I would rather have three sentences from you that you understand properly than a whole page written straight from a book or web site. Quality not quantity!
You can keep this simple and write your thoughts up clearly in your book or you can be creative with how you present it (powerpoint, poster, bookmark, poem, etc).
Week Five
MARCH 3-7
Topic Task
This week we begin our new topic on endangered species. Answer the following question...
What species of animal life would you be sad to see become extinct?
List three bad results that might occur if your chosen species were to become extinct.
You can either post your answer using our class blog, or write it into your homework book.
Extra Math Task
In your homework book you will have glued in your login and password for the 'world maths day' website. This is a global event, where you can have loads of fun competing against students of your own age from all around the world!
Visit www.worldmathsday.com and have a go.
See the pictures of us hard at it answering maths questions
Regular Tasks
Continue with timestable focus, spelling, and 15minute personal reading.
Week Four
FEBRUARY 25-29
Extra Task
Have early nights and get some good sleep. This is because each day this week we have two major PATs (national tests)!
Basic Fact focus
From last Friday's test, you will have a multiplication focus now written into your homework book. Aim to 'know' these rather than needing to 'work it out'.
Spelling Words
See my essential list focus. I will have ten words I have chosen to focus on from my lit. If I think I know all the list, get a parent to test me twice, and sign the list in the back of my book as 'mastered'.
Personal Reading
15 minute minimum
Week Three
FEBRUARY 18-22
Basic Fact focus
From last Friday's test, you will have a multiplication focus now written into your homework book. Aim to 'know' these rather thn needing to 'work it out'.
Spelling Words
See my essential list focus. I will have ten words I have chosen to focus on from my lit. If I think I know all the list, get a parent to test me twice, and sign the list in the back of my book as 'mastered'.
Personal Reading
15 minute minimum
Extra Task
Go to our Class Blog (bottom of menu on left) and post a reply to the "'I' Statements", beginning your comment with "I".
Week Two
FEBRUARY 11-15
We set up our homework book layout today (see picture example). We are trying to save paper by writing up our own homework. It also seems to be helping us practice some measurement, ruling tables, and handwriting skills. This will come in handy for our maths focus on statistics too - bonus!
Tasks this week are fairly standard...
Basic Fact focus (Mix of any up to 10x10 since we are yet to do our first timed times table test)
Spelling Words (see my essential list focus)
Personal Reading (15 minute minimum)
Note: a good order (of difficulty) to learn multiplication facts are 1, 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, 6, 8, 7, 9
Parents: If you're looking at this, you would have also seen the extra task of having a look at this site - well done! :-)
Week One
FEBRUARY 7-8
We are ruling up our maths and draft writing books so that we are all set to go. A few pages were done in class today (Thursday), and your task is to complete the ruling-up at home.
If you were short any items make sure you have all your stationery by Monday so you are ready to go with all we need to do with all of our various learning.
NOTE: some students had manilla folders, rather than manilla envelopes. Envelopes are preferred because we are using them to neatly store extra sheets of various paper (which offen slip out of the folders) and a fairly cheap option compared to some plastic envelopes.
Remember, part of managing yourself is taking responsibility for your own learning. It is up to you to remind your parents about what you need for school.
*NOTE PARENTS... you should be receiving a little homework too this week :-) Yay for you!
